Frequently asked questions

Why does German have three genders?

German inherited its three-gender system from Proto-Germanic. Unlike natural gender (male/female), grammatical gender is largely arbitrary — "das Mädchen" (the girl) is neuter, for example. This is why rules and repetition both matter.

What is the most common German article?

Die is the most frequent article — it covers all feminine nouns AND all plural nouns. Der covers masculine nouns and Das covers neuter nouns.

Are there exceptions to the gender rules?

Yes, always. "Das Mädchen" (neuter, not feminine) and "das Weib" are classic exceptions to natural gender. Loan words are especially unpredictable. Rules get you most of the way — a good vocabulary trainer covers the rest.

Do I need to memorise every noun's gender?

For the most common ~2,000 nouns: yes. For rarer words, the suffix rules are usually enough to make a good guess. Our app focuses on the high-frequency nouns where correct articles matter most.
